Skiing in the French Alps is one of the most popular winter holiday breaks in Europe. With some of the best ski resorts on the continent and the highest peak as well, ski season in the French Alps can last for many months.
In most years, ski season in the French Alps lasts from the first weekend in December through mid March. That said, ski season in the Alps can last much longer than that if there is a particularly wet winter. In some years, ski resorts in France open certain lifts as early as October and keep them open well into April or May.
There’s no way to know in advance how good a ski season in the French Alps will be in a given year. However, if there is lots of early snow, it can be a good indicator for a great ski season, and if there is little snow in December, it can be a sign of a less than spectacular one.
Many ski resorts in France realize that skiiers are uncertain about booking ski holiday packages in advance, so they often offer ski lift pass discounts and deals during the first two weeks of ski season. These discounts can be up to 35% off the cost of a lift ticket, so can offset the disappointment of a not so snowy start to the ski season.
