Just over 100 km from Munich, Neuschwanstein castle makes for one of the best day trips from Munich.
Neuschwanstein castle is located in the town of Schwangau. Trains from Munich Hauptbahnhof (main train station) to Neuschwanstein run via Fussen, a city near Schwangau. Some trains require a change at Buchloe.
Once you have alighted the train in Fussen, you can take a bus to Schwangau to get to Neuschwanstein castle. There are several buses from Fussen to Neuschwanstein, including bus 73 (to Steingaden / Garmisch-Partenkrichen) and bus 78 (to Schwangau). The best way to take a train from Munich to Neuschwanstein is to buy a Bayern Ticket from a ticket machine in the Munich Hauptbahnhof. The Bayern Ticket is good for up to 5 people, and valid from 9am on weekdays (all day on weekends). At only 28 euros for a Bayern Ticket, the cost of getting from Munich to Neuschwanstein by train is less than buying train and bus tickets outright.
NB: In the summer months, the lines for buses from Fussen to Neuschwanstein get very long, so consider starting out early or taking a taxi from Fussen to Schwangau (a 5km taxi ride). Alternately, you can
drive from Munich to Neuschwanstein or take an organized day
tour from Munich to Neuschwanstein.
