Language in Belgium can be a tricky thing, as there is not just one official language spoken in the country. In fact, there are three!<\/p>\n

The territory of Belgium is divided along linguistic lines, with French, Flemish (Dutch), and German all being official languages in Belgium.<\/p>\n

The majority of Belgium is Flemish-speaking, followed by French and then German.<\/p>\n

Geographically, the population in the region of Wallonia speaks French, the population in the northern region of Flanders speaks Flemish, and the small population in the east speaks German.<\/p>\n

There is some geographic overlap of languages in Belgium, so it is not all cut and dried. This is most prominent in the capital city, Brussels, where both French and Flemish are the official languages. All public signs in Brussels are written in both languages, making it easy for anyone that speaks either one to read them.<\/p>\n
