Alhambra in Autumn

When planning your trip to Granada, it is important to consider a number of factors in order to determine the best time to visit the Alhambra. These include the season of the year and the time of day. Both of these are covered in detail below.

Best Time of Year to Visit the Alhambra

There is no “right” season in which to visit the Alhambra. The palaces are stunning year-round, and the gardens are in bloom in almost every month.

As such, a lot depends on your personal preferences. If your main reason for wanting to see the Alhambra is for its gardens, spring and summer can be the best times to visit. This is because the flowers and foliage will be in full bloom in these seasons.

That said, autumn can also be a good time to see the gardens, as the Alhambra and the surrounding area can be quite beautiful as the leaves change colours.

If your main objective is to see the palaces, the off-season can be the best time of year to visit the Alhambra. The crowds are much more sparse during the late autumn, winter, and early spring, and you won’t have to contend with as many other people when viewing the intricate art and design works of the buildings.

The same can be said if you are into photography. It is much easier to take photos of the Alhambra when the crowds are lower than when the palaces are packed with people.

Best Time of Day to Visit the Alhambra

As far as the best of time of day to visit the Alhambra goes, this again depends on your preference. For photographers, the morning can be the best time, as the light tends to illuminate more of the photographic highlights, including the stunning gardens of the Generalife. On the other hand, the late afternoon sun is great for some parts of the Nasrid Palaces and the Alcazaba, so it may be worth going twice if you want to get the best photos of the Alhambra.

If your main concern is avoiding large crowds, the early morning and late evening can be some of the best times to visit the Alhambra. This is also true of lunchtime, when many tour buses and school groups leave to go for meals.
