Best Romantic Road Towns

Harburg, Germany
Harburg

The Romantic Road in Germany is one of the most picturesque driving routes in Europe, and the best Romantic Road towns are not to be missed.

Here is my list of the best towns along the Romantic Road:

Dinkelsbuhl
Home to beautiful wooden houses and historic churches, Dinkelsbuhl is one of the prettiest and most classic Romantic Road towns. If there is one place to visit along the road, this is surely it.

Harburg
A beautiful stone castle on a cliff welcomes visitors to Harburg. The town itself is an idyllic village on the river, with pretty streets full of shops and cafes that can keep you entertained for hours.

Schwangau
Home to Hohenschwangau castle and nearby Neuschwanstein castle, Schwangau is the perfect base for visiting the most famous castles in Germany. Located near the southern end of the Romantic Road, it is a great place to look forward to as you drive towards it.

Rothenburg ob der Tauber
Rothenburg ob der Tauber is arguably the most well-preserved medieval town on the Romantic Road in Germany. History lovers will have no shortage of things to do and see there.

Romantic Road

The Romantic Road in Germany isn’t known for having the best hotels in the world, but with careful searching you can find some hidden gems. Below is a list of what I consider to be the best hotels on the Romantic Road:

Villa Jagerhaus, Hohenschwangau
Villa Jagerhaus is not only in a great location between Hohenschwangau castle and Neuschwanstein castle, but also features great period decor and luxurious interiors.

Hotel-Garni Hornburg, Rothenburg ob der Tauber
Art Nouveau in style, Hotel-Garni Hornburg’s 10 spacious guest rooms feature bay windows with stunning views of Rothenburg’s historic towers and city wall. There are also family rooms with additional sofa beds for those travelling with children.

Schloss Steinburg Hotel, Wurzburg
This castle hotel features sumptuous decor fit for medieval kings and queens, but with all of the modern amenities fit for the 21st century traveller. If you want to have a special meal while you are travelling down the Romantic Road, the hotel’s fine dining restaurant is a great choice.

Hotel Christine, Fussen
The pretty Hotel Christine offers 13 guest rooms with baths or showers, TVs, mini bars, and balconies or terraces. Some have views of Neuschwanstein castle, too. The hotel also offers a garage and free parking lot on the premises for those that arrive by car.

Quality Hotel Augsburg, Augsburg
This four-star hotel offers comfortable accommodation for those that want more of a traditional hotel stay while driving down the Romantic Road. Guest rooms and facilities offer a quality experience, as the name of the hotel implies.
