The Torre de Belem in Lisbon is one of the city’s great examples of Manueline architecture. The architectural style is very unique to Portugal and is sometimes referred to as Portuguese late Gothic. Manueline architecture incorporates nautical themes that were popular during the Age of Exploration.

Located right on the river in Belem, the Torre de Belem was originally built in the 16th century to protect Lisbon’s harbor. Before the waters of the river receded, the tower sat right in the center of the river.Today it sits closer to the banks, and is accessible by a short bridge from the land.

Like its neighbor the Mosteiro dos Jeronimos, the Torre de Belem is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Located in Belem, Lisbon’s western district, the Torre de Belem is not easily walkable from the city center. To get there, take tram 15 or bus 28, 714, 727, 729, or 751 from central Lisbon.
