The best Porto restaurants aren’t always the ones in the most obvious places. Nor are they always the ones in the Portugal guidebooks.

Some of them are off-the-beaten-path, up a steep hill, or hidden away around a corner. After some searching (and some sampling!), here is a list of what I consider to be the best Porto restaurants:

Gourmet Restaurant at The Yeatman Hotel – Michelin-starred and worth the trip up the hill in Vila Nova de Gaia, The Yeatman’s Gourmet Restaurant is one of the top fine dining restaurants in Porto.

The Bull & Bear Restaurant – Consistently rated one of the top restaurants in Porto.

Majestic Cafe – A great place for a snack or light meal. Don’t miss the gorgeous Art Nouveau architecture.

Confeitaria do Bolhao – The perfect place for a quick pastry after visiting the market across the street.

D. Tonho Restaurant – Great views across Porto and a lovely terrace.

Barao de Fladgate Restaurant – In the Taylor’s Port Lodge, great food and wine are served. Views are excellent.

A Tasquinha Restaurant – A great place for a casual lunch or dinner in Porto. The restaurant offers excellent value for money, too.

Barao de Fladgate restaurant in Porto is located inside of the Taylor’s Port wine tasting rooms. Opened in 1994, it is an establishment in Vila Nova de Gaia, and is one of the top rated restaurants in the city.

Barao de Fladgate is located high on a hill in Vila Nova de Gaia. It offers sweeping views overlooking the Douro River and the brightly colored houses of Porto. In the warmer months, you can sit outside on the terrace and enjoy your meal al fresco.

The views aren’t all that make Barao de Fladgate restaurant great, though. It is one of the best seafood restaurants in Porto, providing consistently fresh offerings and inventive preparations. The restaurant also offers daily specials every day of the week, and has a good selection of vegetarian options on the menu. Of course, the wine list boasts of some of the best Port in the region as well.

Booking in advance is advisable during the warmer months. If you have lunch at Barao de Fladgate restaurant, make sure to combine it with a cellar tour and tasting.
