Faro, Portugal
Faro is the de facto capital of Portugal’s Algarve. With its claim to an international airport that is a hub for low-cost airline Ryanair, most visitors to the Algarve pass through Faro as they travel to Portugal’s southern coast.
While some visitors never stop to see Faro, they are missing out on some great treasures.
Faro airport is just a 7 kilometer taxi or bus ride from the city center, and car hire is easy at the many car hire desks at Faro airport.
The town’s old walled city is beautiful to walk around, and is home to the cathedral (se) and some great cafes. Additionally, there are several shopping streets in the city that are great for retail therapy.
Faro also has great sea transport links for those wanting to visit the beautiful island beaches off the coast, or for people interested in exploring the Parque Natural da Ria Formosa by boat.
The city is also an easy jumping off point for visiting other Algarve cities. For example, trains from Faro to Tavira run frequently throughout the day. They are an easy way to take day trips if you make Faro your base while visiting the Algarve.
Faro has several great hotels for visitors to choose from, including some with great views of the water. Accommodation offers good value for money, particularly in the low season.
