Plzen is one of the most famous beer brewing cities in the world. Home to two of the Czech Republic’s most famous breweries, the city is worth a day trip or overnight stay while you are visiting Prague.
The City of Plzen
Plzen (Pilsen in English), the capital of West Bohemia, was founded by King Wenceslas II in 1295. Today Plzen is known for being the home of Pilsner Urquell and Gambrinus, some of the most famous Czech beers.
Plzen is also home to the 102.26 meter (335 foot) St. Bartholomew Cathedral spire, which is the highest church spire in the Czech Republic.
Additionally, Plzen boasts of having the third largest synagogue in the world.
Beer Breweries in Plzen
Opened in 1842, the Pilsner Urquell brewery is the most famous landmark in Plzen. Tours are available at the brewery. During the tour, visitors can drink unfiltered, un-pasteurized Pilsner Urquell directly from the barrel.
Though not the only brewery in the world with the name Gambrinus, the Gambrinus brewery in Plzen is the most famous. Visitors can take tours of the brewery and taste the beer.
