From markets to celebrations, cities like Prague come alive with festivities to commemorate annual holidays. Below are a few of the highlights:
Easter in Prague
Easter is a great time to visit the country. Throughout Prague, Easter markets sell beautiful hand-painted eggs, frosted cookies, traditional Czech food, and other goodies. There are also petting zoos for children to enjoy.
Tradition has it that boys shake rattles (rehatkas) to ward off Judas, and also chase girls with whips made from made braided pussy willow twigs (pomlazkas). Legend has it that being touched by a pomlazka brings one health and youth. You will see both the rattles and the whips throughout the country in the weeks leading up to Easter.
Christmas in Prague
Christmas is another great holiday to spend in Prague. The Czechs celebrate Christmas on December 24th, and they eat carp as their traditional dinner. You can see fishmongers selling live carp throughout Prague and other cities in the week prior to Christmas.
Additionally, there are great Christmas markets in Prague and other towns. They sell everything from wooden toys to seasonal food and mulled wine.
New Year’s Eve in Prague
Ringing in the new year in Prague is a lot of fun, and very exciting. Fireworks take place every New Year’s Eve, and people fill the streets and squares to celebrate. Many of the city’s restaurants, bars, and clubs also put on special events for the holiday.
