Innsbruck Christmas Markets Dates: mid-November to early January.
The Innsbruck Christmas markets are some of the most festive in all of Austria. The markets are located throughout the city center, with the main markets taking place in the square in front of the Golden Roof and the pedestrianized streets around it.
There are various themes for the Christmas markets in Innsbruck. One market street is lined with characters from fairytales and features a building with windows decorated to look like an Advent calendar.
Another is a market just for children. Yet another is located at the top of the mountains. At all of the markets there are traditional market chalets selling wooden handicrafts, ornaments for Christmas trees, mulled wine, bratwurst, and other seasonal goods.
On a particular day in December, there is a procession throughout the city in the evening. It is the celebration of the baby Jesus coming with the angels to bring Christmas presents to children in Austria. The annual parade goes down Herzog-Friedrich-Strasse, and visitors can watch as children dressed as shepherds and angels herd live sheep down the street before a horse-drawn carriage brings the baby Jesus at the end.
