In 2007, the New York Times published an article entitled “On Hallowed Ground, a Place of Painful Beauty”. In it, David Laskin wrote about US World War I monuments in France.
Starting with the Meuse-Argonne American Cemetery, which is the largest American military cemetery in Europe, he argues that Oise-Aisne, Chateau-Thierry, Aisne-Marne, St-Mihiel, and Meuse-Argonne are the main battlegrounds to see, and that it is a shame that so few people are looking for them.
