Strasbourg Christmas Markets
Dates: late November to late December
Dating back to 1570, the Strasbourg Christmas markets are the oldest and most famous Christmas markets in France. With no less than 12 markets dotted throughout the city center, Strasbourg is brimming with seasonal cheer and festive ambiance.

German Christmas market at Place Broglie
Christmas market at Place du Temple Neuf

Christmas market at Place du Corbeau
Swiss village at Place Gutenberg
Children’s village at Place Saint Thomas
Alsatian market at Place Benjamin-Zix – Place Meuniers
People visiting the markets can enjoy the Christmas shops, ice rink, giant Christmas tree, and artisan villages with more than 300 wooden chalets. There are beautiful light displays in the evenings, too, so staying overnight in Strasbourg is also a good idea.
Throughout Strasbourg’s Christmas markets, there is live entertainment, performances, and music to put children and adults of all ages in the holiday spirit.

Over the years, I have visited several times the Strasbourg Xmas Market. It takes place on 2 adjacent squares. The Xmas ambiance is particularly strong when you visit after dark (after 5:00PM) but it has become very commercial with lots of made-in-china stuff and very crowded!!!
For my taste now I much prefer to visit the Xmas Market in Colmar which is 35 miles South. The market displays are spread, downtown, over several smaller squares and along pedestrian streets surrounded by lots of old historic Alsasian houses and permanent business. The entire setting is very quaint. Tourists will feel quite at ease because the general area offers a wide selection of hotels, restaurants, museums, pastry-shops and grocery-stores.
