London 2012 Olympics tickets and discounts were a big topic of discussion around the world in the days and months preceding the Games.
Many people wanted to know how to get London 2012 Olympics tickets, and whether there were discounts available.
Initially, the only way to get London 2012 Olympics tickets was to register interest on the official London 2012 Olympics website. From March 15, 2011 to April 26, 2011, registrants in the UK and select European countries could apply for tickets.
After the registration period, tickets were allocated to applicants by June 24, 2011. Leftover tickets were re-released to registrants on June 24, 2011 at 6am on a first come, first served basis.
After that, they were made available to the general public in the spring of 2012. From May 11 to 17, 2012, applicants that were unsuccessful in the 2011 Olympics tickets buying periods were able to purchase tickets on a first come, first served basis. More tickets were also released to the general public later in May 2012 and just prior to the games.
People outside of the UK or one of the designated European countries could apply for tickets from their country’s National Olympic or Paralympic Committee, or an authorized ticket reseller.
If they couldn’t get London 2012 Olympics tickets through the website, they could buy a London Olympics hotel or tour package. Many of those came with guaranteed tickets to one or more events.
The only way to purchase tickets was to use a Visa card, cash, or check. Due to the high demand, London 2012 Olympics ticket discounts were only available for certain groups like young people, seniors, and students.
