Top Places to Visit in Ireland

Many people only make it to Dublin when they are visiting Ireland, but it’s a shame to miss out on the rest of the country. Ireland has some of the most beautiful natural landscapes and coastline in all of Europe, and it is worth a trip to see them.

As such, here is my list of the top places to visit in Ireland:

Dingle Peninsula
Located in County Kerry in southwest Ireland, the Dingle Peninsula is a mountainous stretch of land that juts 48 kilometres (30 miles) into the Atlantic Ocean. Most people visit for the stunning cliffs, beautiful beaches, and great surfing.

Cork
Cork is one of the most important cities in Ireland. Highlights include the Cork county and city halls, the church tower of Shandon, St Mary’s Cathedral, and St Finbarre’s Cathedral.

Dublin
Ireland’s capital city needs no introduction. From museums and parks to pubs and gardens, there is no shortage of things to do and see there.

Sligo
Sligo is a great place to visit in the north of the country. From cultural sites like Sligo Abbey and Dolly’s Cottage to great markets and outdoor adventure travel opportunities, the area has a diverse range of attractions.

Blarney Castle
Blarney Castle is one of the most famous of its kind in Ireland. This is partly owing to the famous Blarney Stone, which is legendary for giving those that kiss it the gift of eloquent speech.

Aran Islands
The Aran Islands are a group of three islands at the mouth of Galway Bay. They are a great place to visit for those that like outdoor activities and beautiful scenery.

Galway
Galway is another great place to visit in Ireland. As Ireland’s cultural capital, it hosts many festivals and performances throughout the year.

Connemara
Connemara is a picturesque area on the west coast of Ireland. It is best known for the Twelve Bens mountain range, lake-studded Roundstone Bog, and great Atlantic beaches.

Limerick
Visitors to Limerick can explore King John’s Castle, St. Mary’s Cathedral, the university, and the Treaty Stone.

Cliffs of Moher
The Cliffs of Moher are one of the most famous places to visit in Ireland, and are the country’s most visited attraction. When you go, don’t miss the excellent visitors centre.

It’s easy to get around Ireland by driving or by train. If you want to get the most out of the smaller, less visited places in Ireland, hiring a car is a good idea.

Best Ireland Guidebooks

Every major travel publisher makes at least one Ireland guidebook. This article will help you determine which is the best for your trip.

Most companies make a book on Ireland as a whole, but the country’s territory and diversity make for enough material for a full guidebook on specific regions and cities like Dublin.

If you’re only going to go to one city in Ireland, getting a dedicated guidebook is a good idea. For example, Lonely Planet’s book on Dublin gives good in-depth coverage of the city and its surroundings.

If you will be visiting lots of places in Ireland, getting a larger guidebook like The Rough Guide to Ireland is a good idea. You can get the eBook version for your tablet, reader, or smartphone if you don’t want to carry a large book around with you when you are travelling.

Once you know what size book you need, shop around for one that fits your travel style. If you’re backpacking, Lonely Planet and the Rough Guide are some of the best Ireland guidebooks.

If you’re going upscale, look into the likes of the Wallpaper Guide to Dublin. It offers more high-end suggestions for Dublin hotels, restaurants, nightlife, and shopping.

If sightseeing is your main priority, consider picking up the Eyewitness Travel Guide to Ireland. There are photos and illustrations on every page, and the book is great for explaining the details of Ireland’s many historic castles and landmarks.

One last thing to keep in mind when looking for the best Ireland guidebooks: check the date the book was published. If it is more than a year old, don’t buy it. Things change so quickly in Ireland that an old book will be of little use to you now.
